Learn About the Position & Apply

About the Position

The Board’s two Student Board Members represent more than one million students across Washington. Student members have the same responsibilities as adult members, including attending meetings, contributing to discussions, and voting on policy decisions.

In addition to participating in meetings, student members meet with lawmakers and other elected officials to advocate for policies that improve Washington’s education system.

“Serving on the Board has not only given me the chance to represent my community and students statewide, but also the chance to learn more about myself and the education system I’m a part of,” said Abby Wu, the Board's senior student member from Pullman High School. “This experience, from application to the work I partake in today, has equipped me with skills I’ve utilized to become a force for change.”

Eligibility

We’re looking for students who are willing to commit the time and energy needed to represent their peers. You do not need prior experience in education policy or formal student leadership to apply.

We value students who can understand and communicate the experiences of a wide range of students, including those who have faced academic challenges, pursued alternative learning pathways, or navigated school while facing barriers outside the classroom.

Eligible students must:
*Be a current sophomore (rising junior)

*Attend a public or private school in Washington during the 2026–2028 term

*Have a positive academic and/or extracurricular record, demonstrated by grades, activities, accomplishments, and/or recommendations of peers, educators, or community members

Benefits

Serving on the Board is a unique professional development opportunity and a powerful platform for student voice. Students gain leadership skills, policy experience, and professional connections that can support future goals after high school.

Student members work alongside policy and education leaders from across the state, many of whom can serve as strong professional references for career, college, or military applications.

Students are reimbursed for travel expenses and may receive a stipend of up to $100 per day for Board meetings and other required activities.

Educators and Community Leaders: Help Spread the Word

Encouragement from a trusted adult is one of the most common reasons students decide to apply. We appreciate your help reaching students and those who support them.

We’ve created an informational brochure that explains the role, benefits, and how to apply. Additionally, you can share our announcement on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
